The moon’s surface area, expressed in square loonies, is exactly equal to the moon’s volume in cubic loonies. If the moon’s diameter is 2,100 miles, how long is a loonie?
The volume of a sphere is 4/3 times the radius cubed. (Euclid XII, 18) The surface is 4 times the radius squared (Euclid XII, 17). If the moon’s surface in square loonies equals its volume in cubic loonies, then 4 / 3 r = 4 r
4/3 r = 4 r .
4 r =12 r
r = 3r
r=3 The radius of the moon is 3 loonies, so if the radius is 1,050 miles in earth measurement, a loonie equals 350 miles.
H. G. Wells (1866-1946) the British author known mainly for his science fiction (The Time Machine, Invisible Man, War of the Worlds) went to the moon in his mind. His imagination produced a nuclear reaction long before scientists did, and he saw in that awesome weapon the potential for ending war. He believed in a world state run by scientists and philosophers, but by the end of his life, as he watched his beloved London fall under the barrage of rockets which had figured so promisingly in his fiction, he thought that the extinction of the human race might not be such a bad thing after all.
